Harnett County is proud to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 through October 15. This month is an opportunity for the community to learn more about Hispanic cultures, traditions, and history that has contributed to the community and country.
To celebrate, Harnett County is spotlighting Hispanic employees from across Harnett County Government through a video series that can be viewed on our social media and YouTube channel. Through their stories, employees will share their family backgrounds, traditions and what Hispanic Heritage Month means to them.
Harnett County is home to a growing Hispanic community. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, approximately 16.6% of Harnett County’s population identifies as Hispanic or Latino. Some of our employees in our video series have a heritage from Dominican Republic, Mexico, and El Salvador, to name a few. This month-long celebration gives residents the opportunity to see the diverse cultures and traditions represented in Harnett County.
Hispanic Heritage Month began as a week-long celebration in 1968 under President Johnson but was later expanded to a month by President Reagan in 1988.
The Harnett County Public Library System has been offering events and programs throughout September that provide opportunities for residents to learn, celebrate, and experience aspects of Hispanic Culture.
The Main Library branch hosted three programs to teach teens how to make fresh tortillas.
The Dunn Library branch explored traditional Mexican art of papel picado on September 10.
On Saturday, September 19, from 10 - 11 a.m., the Anderson Creek Library branch will host Hello, Hola, Explore, where children will receive a passport and earn stamps as they explore the library through a bilingual story, scavenger hunt, and Spanish vocabulary activities.
